I loved both what your MIL said about the formula companies and what you said about the media talking about how difficult nursing is.

I agree that both are the main culprits of women not breastfeeding. I was sure it was going to be extremely difficult and very painful. I even had a bottle of formula "just in case." But it was not necessary and everything went very well! Part of this was due to some exceptional lactation consultants, like your MIL, in the hospital.

Thanks again for sharing your MIL with us!

"Most challenging: Dealing with people who think b...

"Most challenging: Dealing with people who think breastfeeding is nice but not necessary."

Amen to that! I would wager, though, that everyone in my family has caught a glimpse at this point! :)

Your mom-in-law sounds like a wonderful lactation consultant, and I'm glad she could calm your fears and help your friends and others as well. My midwife who's a lactation consultant gave that same impression of assured competence: a calm assumption that pretty much everyone can breastfeed and, don't worry, she was here to help make it happen. I'm glad there are women like that out there!

I didn't comment before, I think, so I just wanted to say, too, that I loved your post about nursing at mass. I first read it on the Motherwear blog. It really struck a chord with me, and I also was shocked at some of the negative comments when I clicked over to read them. I have a friend who's a nun and when we told her of our own struggles in not feeling welcome with our baby in the church service, she was righteously indignant that anyone would have a problem with babies in church -- she mentioned that Jesus said to let the little children come to him, so shouldn't a church be the most welcoming place for families?

Anyway, thanks for sharing your writing, and thanks to your mom-in-law for the interview!

Wow!
