Here in the UK, there's been a huge amount of work - campaigning, fund- and consciousness-raising, etc. - for a more Christian stewardship of our natural resources (following the Pope's World Peace Day message), but not a word said about our most precious resource of all: human life, and the dignity that should accompany it in all its facets. She also published a children's companion book to the novel about loggerhead sea turtles. Well said. We live in Florida, and you can regularly find huge areas of beaches fenced off and monitored during sea turtle season (apparently people try to steal the eggs, too). This is all government funded, of course. I was staying in a hotel on the beach recently, and their door hangers bragged about how they turn all lights away from the beach at night to protect the sea turtles. In fact, as my children and I went to the beach one day, there was a man dressed up in a turtle costume (poor guy, it was hot) for a marketing photo shoot for another hotel. I've heard Father Pavone talk about the turtles in the past and it is a reality that just leaves me baffled. And irritated. As do the humane society tear jerkers on TV. I find it heartbreaking that there is a need for those commercials but not surprising considering we can't even appreciate our own species so why would we properly care for another? And, of course the opposite is true as well: when we can't even treat an animal with respect that it deserves as a creation of God, then it is also no surprise that we don't afford much dignity to our own littlest members.
